Software updates may not boast the glamour of new MacBook Air models or a preview of a Mac OS X overhaul, but that’s not going to stop Apple from capping off a busy Wednesday with Java updates for Snow Leopard and Leopard users as well as a ProKit update for Apple’s professional applications.
Starting with the Java updates, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 promises improved compatibility, security, and reliability by adding Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22. (Apple provides a little more information–though not much–on the security aspects of this update elsewhere on its site.) The Java update is aimed at Mac OS X 10.6.4 users. Note that J2SE 1.4.2 remains disabled by default in this update, as it’s no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues. Meanwhile, ProKit 6.0 (SnowLeopard) is a 13.5MB file recommended for anyone who uses Apple’s pro applications–Final Cut Studio and all its assorted components, Aperture, Final Cut Express, all the programs that make up Logic Studio, and Logic Express. Apple says the update improves reliability for browsing iPhoto libraries in Aperture and addresses a cosmetic issue with how disclosure triangles look in Aperture. Finally, the update fixes a problem in both Logic Pro and MainStage where numeric parameters display incorrect information.
